Stephon Gilmore to sit out?

Hello AwfulSportsNews fanatics, I am glad that you’ve come back for some awful sports news. Recently, there has been news that New England Patriot’s superstar cornerback Stephon Gilmore will sit out the final season of his 5 year $65 million contract.

The 30 year old is reportedly sitting out in an attempt to get a better contract with Patriots or elsewhere. According to Ian Rapaport, the superstar is currently sitting out nursing a partially torn quad and has not returned to join the team.

The Patriots are now faced with a dilemma: Trade Gilmore, re-sign Gilmore, or release Gilmore. Easier said than done right? let’s take a look.

Trading Gilmore:

Stephon Gilmore has been to 4 Pro Bowls, 2019 Defensive player of the year, 2x All Pro, and a Super Bowl Champion. A player with this type of pedigree will command draft picks…first round draft picks. A Super Bowl-less Jalen Ramsey was traded to the Rams for two 1st(s) and a fourth. Gilmore however is still nursing a leg injury and that might work lower his valuable a bit. It’s very possible for the Patriots to snatch a first and a second with a superb workout from Gilmore after his injury.

Resigning Gilmore:

Gilmore is looking for top dollar. The lower end of the top 5 highest paid cornerbacks is Darius Slay’s $16.8 million and that should be Gilmore’s target. The New England Patriot’s estimated cap space for the upcoming season is $15 Million (top 51). There’s a bit of hope for the Pat’s to resign “Bump n Run” but with incoming QB Mac Jones, I’d expect the Pat’s to covet their new QB and give him the pieces he needs, which may include a a veteran teacher. The Pat’s may want to pass. DB’s like Ronald Darby may fit instead.

Releasing Gilmore:

By releasing Gilmore the Pats will absorb an 8.5 million dollar lashing. It still gives them the ability to dodge the $16 million Gilmore would have gotten and use that money to protect and pamper Mac Jones.

So what do you think? You play GM: Do you trade, resign, or just release Gilmore?
