Hello AwfulGuy Fanatics, I hope that you were enjoying a cold one while watching your favorite teams chose some of the world’s most talented players. Some teams chose no-brainers and some teams left many baffled. Many are baffled by the Buffalo Bills’ pick in DE Greg Rousseau.
The Miami Hurricane had one break-out season where he accounted for 34 solo tackles, 54 total tackles, 19.5 for loss, and 15.5 sacks, which on its face is very impressive. The issue is this, however, the former tackles for loss and sacks leader (ACC 2019) sat the 2020 season out, he’s raw, 30 pounds heavier, and his Pro Day did not look very explosive.
Sitting out of the entire season with little DE in-game experience can be detrimental to Greg’s development. As any fan knows, “the more the repetitions, the better the better the executions.”
He’s one of the most talented yet raw players that I’ve season since Jadaveon Clowney, the field that is. But that’s where the two differ. Clowney impressed at the combine running a 4.53 official 40-yard dash and posted a 37.5 vertical. Greg ran an unofficial 4.68 and posted a 30-inch vert. On top of that, Greg looked winded during some drills even fumbling over his own feet.
My concerns:
Greg has had a little quality experience at DE. One year, IMO, breeds “flash in the pan” syndrome, and the Buffalo Bills have already experienced this with Aaron Maybin. Watching Greg’s Pro Day left much to be desired. Greg being gassed at his Pro Day left me thinking “what the hell was he doing?”
Looking at Greg’s film from his time in Miami, there’s little hand technique, and bend ability. He had an amazing supporting cast in Jonathan Garvin, Scott Patchan, and other LBs.
My positive points:
Greg is 6’7, 266 pounds, and has an 83-inch wingspan. He had straight line in-game speed and was very disruptive when he moved inside. I believe that he and Coach McDermott will make beautiful music in the future. I have no concerns if he is solely in the hands of Coach McDermott. He also has a supporting cast that will allow him to grow with great mentorship.
My overall opinion:
If Greg was going to any other team at 30, I would definitely have a problem with it. Since, however, Greg is going to the Buffalo Bills, I believe that he has an ultra-high ceiling. Could Greg still become a bust? Absolutely. Could Zach Wilson be a bust too? Absolutely. Look for the Bills to also make a long-term project on the second pick as well.
