Next on the chopping block is newly signed Carolina Panthers Quarterback Philip J. Walker. PJ is a unique signing to the Panthers in that PJ came from the newly formed XFL’s Houston Roughnecks.
PJ Walker’s stats in the XFL:
PJ Walker 6’0, 207 pounds, out of Temple University threw for 1,338 yards, 15 TDs and 4 interceptions in only 5 games. In comparison, NFL QB Nick Foles threw for 736 yards through 4 games.
Ok, let’s be honest with ourselves, PJ’s stats would be truly impressive numbers by NFL standards, but they were attained in a league with lesser talent if any talent at all. Nick Foles 736 yards would therefore be weighted on a higher scale.
Should one overlook PJ just because of the lesser talent in the XFL? Absolutely not. You could think of PJ’s season in the XFL as a very long preseason tryout.
Still, despite the lack of XFL defensive talent, PJ Walker was still entertaining with his side armed touchdowns, deep passes, and spectacular scrambling.
Now let’s look at the pickup by the Panthers. The Panthers newly acquired Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Right now, as it stands, the Panthers have Teddy Bridgewater, Will Grier, and PJ Walker. PJ will most likely compete with Grier for the number two spot or at the very least go to the practice squad.
I truly feel like the Panthers will look for another QB vet seeing that we’ve seen nothing but interceptions from Will Grier and the fact that PJ hasn’t played an NFL down.

It has clearly been a tough road for PJ Walker. Luckily, PJ will be surrounded by Matt Rhule and Joe Brady who are brilliant offensive minds. It’ll be interesting to see how they plan to use PJ Walker. I really can’t tell you that he’d be a starter right now and, to be honest, he has an uphill battle to even fight for the number two position. I’ll keep my eye on PJ to see his progress.
Take a look at PJ’s stats at Temple-U. He’s just as entertaining then as he is now.
