Will the Lions make a play for Tua?

There has been growing speculation around Tua Tagovailoa and the Detroit Lions. This speculation is specifically about the possibly of the Lions making a play for Tua. Now, the scenario isn’t all that bad, just unlikely.

Not a Bad scenario:

The Detroit Lions have the 3rd pick of the NFL 2020 draft. The 3rd pick is especially ripe to choose a young Tua Tagovailoa. Tua, former Alabama Quarterback, has thrown for 2,840 yards and 33 TDs prior to injury (in 9 games). He doesn’t have just one year of getting the job done, Tua has a body of work that truly solidifies his greatness. The Detroit Lions stand to gain a young QB, with talent, that could put the team in a position to make a play for the playoffs down the line. The Lions could phase out Matt Stafford who is getting up there with age and injury, and free up cap space bringing in even more talent to surround the young QB.

Not Likely:

Although Matt Stafford is coming back from a back injury that sidelined him for most of the 2019 season, Tua himself has experienced a complexed injury as well. Tua’s hip injury was deemed serious in that many compared it to the devastating injury of the great Bo Jackson. Because of this injury, Tua may not start for the first half of the NFL season. He also may be without a good veteran QB mentor and proper send off as Matt and Tua would not be on the same team for the 2020 season.

Stafford is already proven at QB, and one could say that the Lions’ inability to block up front, and properly structure their organization, put Stafford in the position he’s in today. To be honest, I’d love to see Matt Stafford go to a team that could give him the protections and the weapons he needs, but the Lions are in a great position to do so this year. I believe Matt Stafford heals in time for next season and the Lions find him the parts and pieces he needs to be successful. Caveat, if the Lions somehow FUBAR this up, expect Matt to ask for a trade sooner than later.
