Kyle Allen should be the new Panthers quarterback

On Tuesday, NFL Network’s Tom Peliserro reported Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is believed to be dealing with a Lisfranc injury.

A Lisfranc injury – also known as a Lisfranc fracture – is an injury of the foot in which one or more of the metatarsal bones are displaced from the tarsus.

Yeah, it looks as painful as it sounds.

The plan is for Carolina to rehab Newton’s foot injury and avoid possible foot surgery, but he is expected to miss some “significant time.”

Kyle Allen is expected to get the start in Week 4 against the Houston Texans and likely remain the starter for the foreseeable future.

Panthers’ Kyle Allen wins big in start; QB dilemma in Carolina

Allen was superb in Carolina’s Week 3 victory against the Arizona Cardinals, completing 19 of 26 passes for 261 yards and four touchdowns, making the Panthers decision to ultimately rest and rehab Newton easier knowing they have a reliable option under center.

Not only impressed with his overall performance on Sunday, Panthers’ players and coaches took note of the second-year QB’s calm, cool, and collective nature the moment he stepped on the field.

Allen kept it simple, not trying to do too much with the football. He was good in his reads, made the throws he needed to, and wasn’t forcing throws into tight coverage.

More importantly, the Panthers won the game.

My take: I poised the question after their Week 3 win against the Cardinals: Should Carolina consider making a switch at quarterback?

My answer: absolutely.

The same size for Allen is extreeemely small, just two* games, but the 23-year-old is showing the potential to perform at the NFL level.

Of course, we need to see how Allen performs during the course of an NFL season, but his job is fairly safe until at least the bye week – Week 7 – or until Newton is 100-percent, and who knows when that will be.

Ranking the “best” winless team in the NFL

Newton’s health is a serious concern and it’s beginning to affect his on-field performance. Whether the Panthers admit it or not, Newton’s shoulder is not 100-perfect. Now, compiled with this potentially significant Lisfranc injury, can we really expect the Panthers to be competitive with Newton under center?

Proooobably nawt.

No doubt it’s an extremely tough decision for the Panthers to consider replacing their franchise quarterback and beloved favorite in Carolina, but the fans are growing restless and are looking at the quarterback position.

Do you think the Panthers need to make a switch at QB?
