New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley had to be helped off the field late in the second quarter of Sunday’s game after injuring his right ankle.
The Giants superstar running back did not return in the second half against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was seen on the sidelines with a walking boot on his right foot.
Barkley is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday, but initial X-rays on his right ankle did not reveal a break – Phew.
Barkley suffered the injury as he was tackled awkwardly by Buccaneers safety, Mike Edwards, and hobbled off to the sideline, eventually helped off the field by trainers and did not return to the game.
Barkley was relatively upbeat when he talked about the injury.
“Could it be way worse? Yes,” Barkley said. “I’m not out for the season. I’m going to try to hopefully do whatever I can do to get back as quickly as possible. Not just for myself but for this team.”
Barkley entered Sunday second in the NFL with 227 yards rushing, averaging 7.8 yards per carry.
Early indications are that Barkley is expected to miss a “few” games.
Back-up running-back Wayne Gallman will likely assume the starting job.
My take: Anytime you lose your star player, it sucks. Barkley said it best, “It could be worse.” He didn’t break his ankle – thankfully – and will only miss a couple games.
Giants fans gotta be breathing a huge sigh of relief.
Barkley’s injury overshadowed the spectacular first career start by Daniel Jones, who completed 23 of 36 passes for 336 yards, four total touchdowns (two passing, two rushing), zero interceptions, including a late fourth quarter comeback that gave the Giants a much needed first win on the season.
Daniel Jones + Saquon Barkley = Happy Giants fans (for now)
Can’t wait to see what the offense can do when Barkley’s back.
