A Heroic effort
“9 touchdowns, 570 yards passing, 41/61 passing, long of 65 yards, 2 ints, and 2 sacks.” Normally, when you look at a stat line like this you’re thinking maybe the stats of a quarterback over the span of 3 or maybe even four games. No, this is in one night! And from one quarterback, one Anthony Gordon QB of the Washington State Cougars (3-1).

Who?
Gordon, a 6’3, 210 Ibs, senior quarterback at Washington State, has been wreaking havoc on college football defenses this season. The relentless quarterback racked up impressive numbers over the over the past few games verses the Northern Colorado Bears (UNCO) (0-4) and the Houston Cougars (UH) (1-3) (Breaking Gardner Minshew’s record in the process).
Heres the stat line against UNCO:
- 36/48, 440 yds, 3 Td, 1 Int, 75.0% completion rate, 2 sacks, 71.0 Qbr,
and the stat line against UH:
- 31/39, 464 yds, 4 Td, 1 Int, 79.5% completion rate, 2 sacks, 84.4 Qbr
Even after their disheartening lost to the UCLA Bruins, Head Coach Mike Leach soured by defeat stated, “570 yards. 9 touchdowns. I hope everybody does that, ” (Mike Leach). When asked about Gordon’s contribution to the turnovers in the game, Mike leach said, “Only 1 interception was on Gordon.”
“570 yards. 9 touchdowns. I hope everybody does that, “

Worthy Adversary
The Superman heroics of the UCLA vs Washington State game weren’t exclusive to Gordon. UCLA Bruins’ quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson also had a very impressive night.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s stat line:
- Passing: 507 yrds, 5 Td, 1 Int.
- Rushing: 11/57 yrds, 2 Td.
This rival of Gordon’s heroic night ultimately put a wrench in his plans ending Washington State’s undefeated record of 3-0 to 3-1, (67-63).
Ok, Lets Be Honest For a Moment
Anthony Gordon has been damn near God like over his past 4 games averaging 473.5 yards and 5.25 touchdowns per game, but the questions begs “who was he facing?”

Northern Colorado Bears (UNCO) (0-4)
The Colorado Bears (all time 51-57-7) are in the Rocky Mountain Conference, “The Rocky Mountain Conference?” Exactly. The Colorado Bears are also dead last in the Big Sky Standings at 0-4. It’s difficult to actually find stats on the Colorado Bears since no one really cares them.
Let’s take a look at the Houston Cougars (UH) (1-3).
The Houston Cougars have faired a bit better than The Colorado Bears. The Houston Cougars, though 1-3, have had seasons above .500 the past two years.
- 2018: .615,
- 2017: .583
The Cougars attended the Armed Forces Bowl (2018) (8-5) and were dog-walked by Army (11-2). This game was horrendous with the Cougars losing 70-14!
My Take: Reality Setting In
Anthony Gordon has put on a monstrous display of QB play during the last few games but that showing was hollow. These teams, respectfully speaking, couldn’t beat a 25th rank team with kickers playing every position. Even The Bruins, a team that has become a shell of itself over the past few years, managed to beat a team where its QB threw for 9 touchdowns! I think it’s clear to say that we could chalk these stats up to the lack of overall defensive talent level of lesser teams. Anthony Gordon and the Washington State Cougars appear to be the kings of the junk yard dogs, but that’s until a bigger, much meaner, dog steps into focus.
