Panthers’ Newton (foot) ruled OUT against Cardinals

After re-aggravating an ankle injury in last Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterback Cam Newton has been ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the Arizona Cardinals.

Newton was seen around the Carolina Panthers’ facility throughout the practice week in a walking boot, ultimately revealing it was a re-aggravated foot injury.

Head coach Ron Rivera noted Newton was dealing with soreness all week, but felt very good at the end of the week. To avoid another setback, the team agreed it was best to sit him out for Sunday’s game.

“He’s going to do everything he can to get back out as soon as he can,” Rivera said.

Second-year quarterback Kyle Allen will get the start.

Allen will be responsible for turning around the sinking ship while Newton recovers from his injury. Fortunately enough, Allen is responsible for the teams only win in their last ten games – a Week 17 win against the New Orlean Saints. Granted the Saints starters were not playing, Allen went 16 of 27 for 266 yards, three total touchdowns and no interceptions.

My take: Newton’s comeback after shoulder surgery has not gone like the quarterback was hoping and it’s clear that his shoulder it is still bothering him. Now, coupled with an ailing mid-ankle sprain, the Panthers are off to a shaky 0-2 start and now are without their starter. The team hopes the time spent recovering can help the quarterback get right and make a run at the wide-open NFC South. For the mean time, fans hope Allen can pull off a victory or two
