Dolphins name Josh Rosen the starter

Josh Rosen is finally getting his second chance.

According to NFL Insider Ian Rapoport, the Miami Dolphins are planning to start Rosen in place of Ryan Fitzpatrick this weekend against the Dallas Cowboys.

As the back-up to Fitzpatrick, Rosen has seen little opportunity on the field and when he has seen the field, the ‘Fins are usually getting the brakes ran off them.

Rosen was traded by the Arizona Cardinals, who the team selected No. 10 overall in the 2018 draft, this offseason to the Dolphins for two-second-round picks in April’s draft. In 13 games with Arizona, Rosen completed 55.2 percent of his passes for 2,278 passing yards with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

The team won just three games.

The switch at quarterback allows the Dolphins to see exactly what the 22-year-old, second-year quarterback from UCLA can do and decide if he fits their long-term solution as the organization’s next franchise quarterback.

It will likely be a short-term strategy though. The Dolphins are in full rebuild mode and are most likely a shoe-in for a top-five selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, a draft class led by Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa. With already three (!!!) first-round selections in next year’s draft, the Dolphins will have no problem nabbing a quarterback early if Rosen underperforms.

Have we really seen a more horrible situation for Rosen though? In his rookie season with the Cardinals, he had little to no help from their offensive line and was sacked 45 (!!) times. Now in his sophomore season with the Dolphins, much of the same – no offensive line.

In two mop-games this season, Rosen completed 8 of 21 passes for 121 passing yards and two interceptions.

My take: Miami has already joined Spongebob at rock-bottom and have literally nothing to lose or gain with this move. If we are being honest, the organization already have their sights on quarterbacks from the 2020 draft class (Tua) and are probably making this move to justify trading not one, but two, second-round picks for a quarterback who had a horrible rookie season. Im all for second chances, hell, even third, fourth, and fifth (just look at Fitzpatrick’s career), but Rosen just isn’t the ‘Chosen’ one.
