Indianapolis Colts‘ soon-to-be Hall of Fame kicker, Adam Vinatieri, has been the most reliable kicker in the NFL over his past 24 seasons. But lately, it appears the Colts organization may have a kicking situation that needs to be addressed.
In Sunday’s 19-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans, the veteran kicker Vinatieri missed two extra-point kicks that potentially could have cost his team the game.
Dating back to last season, Vinatieri has missed an extra point in his last three games, seven total in the past three games, the longest stretch of his career. Overall, Vinatieri has missed an extra point in four of his last five games.
Vinatieri was visibly upset and was quick to exit the Colts’ locker room, but did provide little words to the media. “You’ll hear from me Monday,” he said.
Vinatieri, 46, is the NFL’s all-time leading scorer and no doubt will go down as one of the greatest kickers in NFL history when he hangs up the cleats. Unfortunately, it might be sooner than most expected.
It’s disheartening to see a kicker of Vinatieri’s caliber struggle, especially in situations you’d expect him to be “Mr. Reliable.” Vinatieri had a marvelous career with the New England Patriots, including the game-winning kicks in Super Bowl 36 and Super Bowl 38.
Most fans are hoping Vinatieri finds his groove and returns to reliability the Colts desperately need. If not, we wish the best for Vinatieri if he does in fact retire.
